New York Jets vs. Buffalo Bills: How they match up in Week 10
The Jets are reeling with three straight losses dropped them from the playoff hunt. The Bills have lost four straight and are regarded as one of the worst teams in football.
Both teams have rookies that were picked in the top 10 of April’s draft, but there’s a chance neither one of them will play.
It may not be the prettiest matchup. But for the Jets, it’s a critically an important one.
What’s at stake
Jets: Last week’s game in Miami was a must-win, and the Jets lost. So what does that make this? If the Jets can’t beat the Bills, a bad team that has had even less offensive success than the Jets, it would be a signal that things just aren’t working under coach Todd Bowles. A few weeks ago, after the Jets climbed out of a 1-3 hole, they insisted that they had learned and grown from their mistakes of the past. And yet today, they have a worse record than they did a year ago at this time. They need to win this game to start to show that they’re making progress, because if they take a big step back this year it will probably cost Bowles his job.
Bills: A 2-7 record means the Bills are already playing out the string. But they can drag the Jets down to the AFC East basement with a win, which should be incentive enough. It’s unclear who will start at quarterback: Nathan Peterman has been absolutely atrocious, and rookie Josh Allen returned to practice this week after missing the last three games with a shoulder injury. Allen is listed as questionable. No matter who plays, the Bills’ offense likely won’t be effective. But Allen has a better chance of connecting on a big play than Peterman. And the Bills will be hungry for a victory, knowing this is one of their best chances.
Jets offensive line versus Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes: The Bills’ best pass rusher doesn’t have a sack in his last three games. But don’t let that fool you, he’s still one of the most disruptive pass rushers in the NFL. Josh McCown, who will start in place for Sam Darnold, doesn’t have nearly the mobility of his rookie teammate. So expect the Bills to do everything they can to to make McCown’s job more difficult. If the Jets want to win this game, they’ll have to do a good job of protecting McCown — especially early as he plays his first regular season game in nearly a year.
How they’ll win
Jets: It’s become clear that the Jets can’t rely on their offense. And even though things would probably run a little smoother in the long run with McCown at the helm, it’s hard to believe they’ll run better this game because McCown is going to be rusty and the Jets will likely be without Robby Anderson (listed as doubtful with an ankle injury). So the defense is going to have to win this game for the Jets. The unit needs to play as well as they did in Chicago and Miami the last two weeks, and probably even force a turnover to score defensive points or set the Jets up in great field position. Given McCown’s certain rust, they Jets should make it a point to run the ball — a lot. When they run well they’re hard to beat.
Bills: They should take a lot early shots down the field on offense, because their best chance of beating the jets is to take the early lead. If the Jets are playing from behind, they’ll have to throw the ball. And the Jets have had very little offensive success when they’ve been one-dimensional. The Jets have had trouble stopping LeSean McCoy in year’s past, so perhaps they can get him going this week. But the Bills most realistic chance at winning is to put pressure on McCown and stay mistake free on offense. That won’t be easy, because the Bills have had 14 turnovers in their last four games.
