5 match ups to watch in Philadelphia Eagles vs. Carolina Panthers: Who will contain Cam Newton?
PHILADELPHIA — The Carolina Panthers offense hasn’t hit on all cylinders yet this season. It’s been short-circuited by a lack of explosive plays and turnovers, and the end result is a team that is 3-2 and searching for a real breakout game. But the potential is still there.
Therein lies the rub.
The Panthers have a former NFL MVP at quarterback in Cam Newton. Running back Christian McCaffrey can make plays in the running or passing game. Wide receivers Devin Funchess, DJ Moore and Curtis Samuel make up a young core on the outside. Tight end Greg Olsen is consistent when healthy.
So the Panthers still present plenty of matchup problems, even if they haven’t put it all together yet. And those matchup problems — on both sides of the ball — will be on full display when Carolina squares off with the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday.
Here are five to watch.
Cam Newton’s nine touchdown passes this season rank far outside the NFL’s top 10, but he’s still having one of the more productive seasons of his illustrious career. Newton’s completing his passes at a career-best 65.9 percent clip, and he’s throwing 5.3 percent of his passes for touchdowns, the second-highest mark of his career. There’s also his legs. Newton has rushed for three touchdowns and is breaking off 4.6 yards per attempt.
So Jordan Hicks will have plenty to worry about as he gets the Eagles defense prepared for each play. He’ll have to hold down his spot in the middle of the defense and help the Eagles rush to the ball. It’ll make multiple players to bring Newton down, and the Eagles can’t let him escape to improvise and make other plays with his legs. That’s where Hicks comes in.
Mario Addison began his career as a journeyman, but in the past couple years in Carolina, he’s come into his own. Addison has 36.5 sacks since the start of the 2014 season, and he has 3.5 sacks through five games in 2018. He’s a dangerous rusher off the edge, and so left tackle Jason Peters has his work cut out for him. Peters is playing his first game since suffering a biceps injury in the Thursday night win over the New York Giants, and this isn’t easing back into things. It’ll be interesting to see how Peters manages and if the Eagles help him with running backs and tight ends chipping Addison. The Giants couldn’t get to quarterback Carson Wentz last week, and it was clear what Wentz could do when he had time.
