Public Betting Trends
According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetNow.eu, the Patriots are 13.5-point favorites to beat the Jets. The total, meanwhile, sits at 44.5 points. As of this writing, 60% of the public betting tickets are on the Patriots to cover the point spread.
New York Jets
Jets CB Trumaine Johnson was held out of practice on Wednesday. Asked why, coach Todd Bowles responded it was because of “an in-house matter that we’re dealing with.” Johnson says he will practice Thursday and play in the season finale, but the coach only said, “We’ll see.” Signed to a five-year, $72.5 million contract over the offseason, Johnson has had a disappointing debut season in New York.
New England Patriots
Tom Brady plans to continue his career beyond 2019. 2019 is the final year of his current contract. “I have goals to not only play next year, but beyond that,” Brady confirmed in his weekly interview with Westwood One. “I don’t take any of these things for granted, but I hope I can keep playing, and I hope I can keep playing at a championship level.” The 41-year-old hasn’t played at his usual MVP level this season, though he’s still been reasonably productive, contributing 27 total touchdowns (25 passing, two rushing) over 15 appearances.
NFL Betting Trends
The over is 4-0 in the Jets’ last four games overall but the under is 9-4 in their last 13 divisional games.
The under is 7-1 in the Patriots’ last eight games overall and is 9-2 in their last 11 games played in the month of December.
The under is a perfect 5-0 in the last five meetings between these two teams and I like the Jets and Patriots to make it six consecutive unders on Sunday. Brady hasn’t played anywhere near his usual level over the past month and was straight up bad against the Bills last Sunday, throwing for just 126 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. With Brady struggling, Josh Gordon suspended and Rob Gronkowski a shell of his former self, the Pats will need to rely on their running game and defense from here on out, which is yet another reason I like the under this weekend.
The New York Jets close out their season with a trip to Foxboro to face the New England Patriots.
Sunday will mark the end of what’s been a rebuilding season for the Jets. They’re 4-11 and have been out of the playoff hunt for weeks with head coach Todd Bowles on the hot seat.
However, there have been a couple bright spots to the season. Sam Darnold, who the Jets drafted with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, looks to be the quarterback of the future for New York. Since returning from a foot injury, Darnold has thrown six touchdowns and only one interception in three games.

Darnold arguably had his best game of the season against the Green Bay Packers last week. He threw for three touchdowns and had season-highs in passing yards (341) and passer rating (128.4).
With that said, the Jets rank near to last on offense and defense. They have the fourth-worst offense and the seventh-worst defense in the league.
The Jets’ lone Pro Bowler, between the offensive and defensive sides of the ball, is Jamal Adams. The second-year safety has 104 combined tackles, 3.5 sacks, three forced fumbles and an interception.
As for the Patriots, Sunday marks the end of the regular season for them but they’ll continue to play into January. They won the AFC East for the 10th straight season, clinching the title with a 24-13 win over the Buffalo Bills in Week 16.
Even though they have a spot in the playoffs all wrapped up, the Patriots still have something to play for on Sunday. If New England wins, it clinches a first-round bye for the ninth straight season. If it wins and the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers lose, New England will get the top seed in the AFC and home-field advantage. However, if the Patriots lose on Sunday and the Houston Texans win, the Patriots will have to play on Wild Card weekend.
Prior to its win over Buffalo, New England received news that wide receiver Josh Gordon was stepping away from the team after he reportedly failed another drug test.
The Patriots can use Sunday to figure out how to replace one of its top receivers. Tom Brady is having another good season but has struggled the last two games. He’s tossed just two touchdowns and has three interceptions over the last two games.
New England has received decent production on the ground game this season. Rookie running back Sony Michel has 881 rushing yards this season after rushing for 116 yards against the Bills.
Maybe a game against the Jets can get the ball rolling for Brady. In the first matchup between the two teams this season, Brady arguably had his best game of the season. He threw for 283 yards and two touchdowns and had a season-high passer rating of 115.4., leading New England to a 27-13 win.
If Brady can repeat that performance, New England will probably get a week to rest up before its first playoff game. But when facing a longtime rival, you can never know what to expect with the Jets looking to play spoiler.
Jets vs. Patriots head-to-head stats
This matchup heavily favors this Patriots when they have the ball. New England ranks eighth in scoring, averaging 26.5 points per game. The Jets have the fifth-worst scoring defense, allowing 26.9 points per game.
New England also has the advantage if you flipped things around. The Jets are 21st in scoring, averaging 22 points per game. The Patriots have the 10th best scoring defense, allowing 21.5 points per game.
Sony Michel has performed well against AFC East opponents this season. He ran for 116 yards against the Bills last week and rushed for 112 yards against the Dolphins in September. He ran for a career-high 133 yards against the Jets in November.
Sunday will mark Sam Darnold’s first start against the Patriots. He is 1-2 against AFC East opponents this season.
Jets vs. Patriots betting odds
The Patriots are 13.5-point favorites at home. The over/under is set at 44.5 points.
