Kansas City Chiefs vs. Oakland Raiders: Expert predictions
The picks are in for Sunday’s regular season finale between the Kansas City Chiefs and Oakland Raiders, and while some analysts think the Raiders will be able to put up a fight, the consensus this week is that the Chiefs will be able to close out the year with a win at Arrowhead Stadium.
There’s some momentum on Oakland’s side this week after a 27-14 win over the Denver Broncos in Week 16, while the Chiefs are coming off losses to the Chargers and Seahawks. Still, most feel the Chiefs will be able to rebound emphatically on Sunday.
The Chiefs come into the game at 11-4 and will be looking to wrap up the AFC West title and home field advantage throughout the conference playoffs. They stand as 13.5-point favorites in the game, but Oakland (4-11) will come in with some confidence after keeping things competitive against the Chiefs in Week 13.
The Raiders lost 40-33 in that game and feel they might have been able to come out with a win had they made a few less mistakes. This week’s game will be their Super Bowl, so expect them to throw everything they have at the Chiefs in an attempt to pull off a stunner.
Here’s a rundown of what national analysts and reporters are saying about this week’s game.
CBS SPORTS/PETE PRISCO: CHIEFS 37, RAIDERS 27
“If the Chiefs win here, they lock up the top seed in the AFC,” wrote Prisco. “I think that will happen, even if the Raiders have played better lately as a team. The Chiefs offense will be too much for the Raiders, but Oakland will score here as well. It will be fun, but the Chiefs will take it. ” Click here for Prisco’s full Week 17 picks, which include the Vikings over the Bears, the Colts over the Titans and the Ravens over the Browns.
BLEACHER REPORT EXPERT CONSENSUS: CHIEFS 37, RAIDERS 20
“In addition to locking up home-field advantage,” Bleacher Report analyst Gary Davenport said, “the Chiefs are going to want to re-establish some positive momentum after those back-to-back setbacks. The best way to do that is by dropping a piano on the Raiders. Look out below.”
ESPN NFL NATION: CHIEFS OVER RAIDERS
Paul Gutierrez, Raiders reporter: Chiefs 31, Raiders 23 – “The Raiders are coming off an emotional high, a Christmas Eve win over the Broncos in what might have been their final game in Oakland and will be playing for pride in Kansas City. The Chiefs, meanwhile, are playing not only for a division title, but playoff seeding and potential home-field advantage throughout the postseason. The Chiefs have Travis Kelce, who torched Oakland for 168 yards and two TDs on 12 catches on Dec. 2, and the Raiders have trouble covering tight ends.”
Adam Teicher, Chiefs reporter: Chiefs 34, Raiders 24 – “The Chiefs are 9-0 against teams that will not make the playoffs, like the Raiders. They are four seconds shy and a botched coverage on a Chargers two-point conversion attempt from being similarly undefeated at Arrowhead Stadium. The Raiders aren’t strong enough to buck either of these trends.”
ESPN EXPERT PANEL: CHIEFS OVER RAIDERS
Each week ESPN’s panel of ten experts (Matt Bowen, Mike Clay, Mike Golic, Dan Graziano, Mina Kimes, Louis Riddick, Molly Qerim Rose, Kevin Seifert, Seth Wickersham, Trey Wingo) picks the winner of every NFL game, with their predictions being put into a feature along with the community prediction of the online NFL Pigskin Pick ‘Em game. This week, every expert likes the Chiefs to win, as do the players of the Pigskin Pick ‘Em game.
ESPN: DARREN WOODSON AND TEDY BRUSCHI – CHIEFS OVER RAIDERS
Woodson – “We saw Oakland last week — they celebrated that win that they had last week and possibly their last game in Oakland and they seemed to treat it like the Super Bowl. That ends this week. I think all the hype and all the things that have gone on this week play themselves out. Kansas City at home closes it out with a win.”
Bruschi – “I agree with you 100 percent. They’ll finish it out strong at home. They’ll get a win. Chris Jones, one of the best interior linemen in the game, doesn’t get the credit he deserves. I’m giving it to him right now.”
